Personal tax allowance and benefits

A single person should be allowed £7,500 to £8,500 before tax is chargeable. A couple could claim £15,000 between them; that is to say if one isn’t working, the other claims both allowances. A married couple could add £2,000 - £3,000 for a marriage allowance making it £20,000 to encourage a stable family life. Any tax losses to the Inland Revenue could be reclaimed by increasing VAT.
